The clinical manifestations of transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) in preterm infants are always different from the term infants because of the immature lungs, so retrospective study of clinical features and the severity related factors of disease can make sense for enhancing the understanding of TTN for pediatricians. 602 cases in preterm infants diagnosed with TTN at Neonatal Treatment Center of Jilin University for the last seven years were analyzed in this study, all the cases were divided into 2 groups according to gestational age (GA), including 256 cases of small GA preterm infants (<34 weeks" gestation) and 346 cases of near-term infants(34∼37 weeks" gestation). Each group was further divided into mild group and severe group depending on whether application of respiratory support (continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and mechanical ventilation). We analyzed and compared the clinical features and the severity related factors of disease of infants between different gestational ages in preterm infants. The results showed the initial respiratory rate (RRin) was higher in severe group of TTN in small GA infants, while RRin and the mode of delivery were both statistically significant between mild and severe group in near-term infants. So this indicated elective caesarean section (CS) was the risk factor of severe condition in TTN of near-term infants, and RRin maybe the predictive factor of aggravation of the disease. © 2011 IEEE.
